South Texas Brush Country
South of San Antonio, east of Laredo, west of Corpus Christi and north of the Rio Grande, this true “working ranch” rests quietly in an area that abounds with native wildlife. As C.L. Douglas points out in his book Cattle Kings of Texas, the area of the state where the Contigo lies “—is certainly one of the last truly natural wildlife frontiers remaining anywhere.” The property was originally acquired through a “land for services” acquisition between land surveyor Felix Blucher and the King Ranch. The ranch has proudly remained in the same family since that acquisition in the 1800s.
Many years of intense range management combined with heavenly created natural habitat are on the cutting edge of providing hunters and visitors with what is commonly referred to as “an experience of a lifetime.” The whitetail deer, the most sought after big game animal in the world, runs abundantly on the Contigo. The ranch is literally covered with thick native brush. This God given natural habitat reaps with nutritional value for the deer and contributes immensely to the quality of bucks produced every year.
Native & Diverse Wildlife
The whitetail deer is only one of many native species of wildlife thriving on the Contigo. The elusive Nilgai Antelope is also abundant and one of the most sought after big game animals on the ranch. Considered native to this area of Texas, this huge and colorful antelope produces one of the finest wild game meats in the entire world and has been selected as a prime menu item in many 5-star restaurants. Rio Grande turkey, Javelina, Wild Boar, Bobcats, Coyotes, Mountain Lions, Dove, Bobwhite Quail, and over 500 other species of birds are also among the list of confirmed sightings on the Contigo.
